While painting, a gentleman came by and felt the need to have a conversation with me. I really don’t need to concentrate so I always welcome the company.
Seriously, I really do take all the necessary precautions to avoid artist watcher but there is always one very determined soul that needs to turn his car around and come around for a closer look.
A few steps I take to avoid people.
- Step 1. Paint near a blind curve. Sure there is a chance you may get killed but chances are the lookie loo will see you at the very last moment which will not give them enough time to stop.
- Step 2. Paint on an uphill road. This is great because you can avoid bikers and walkers. Walkers rarely take paths with steep inclines and bikers will not stop their uphill momentum just to stop and chat.
- Step 3. Use a BIG umbrella. The longer you can conceal yourself the better.
- Step 4. Buy a big car and paint behind it.
- Step 5. If you hear someone coming, hide in a nearby bush. This is very effective but not very cool.
- Step 6. Paint somewhere illegal. If you see a sign that says “No Trespassing, continue forward for an interruption free painting experience. Note: This may lead to your arrest and/or a fine.
I normally get the same questions over and over again. It is a good idea to have prepared answers. Here are some of today’s questions and answers.
What do you think about the painting?
I think I can do better.
Do you make a living painting?
No, I restore perpetual motion machines.
How do you know when the painting is finished?
When I don’t know what else to do.
How do you know when a painting is good?
When a collector thinks it is good enough to hang in their home.
All kidding aside most people are fine but every now and then I get one that…
A few still lifes I painted the day before.

Your landscape is haunting. I hope I can get to the place you are some day. Able to distill a subject down to its essence.
I have hidden behind my van to paint before. Mostly because I am self consious around people when painting. Trying to get over that.

Thank you Robin.
I love the way you described my work.

Elio,
regarding number 6 about avoiding people, you must read my July 12th post referring to trespassing
I wish I had the gift of being relaxed enough to not mind spectators. Not yet
