The Beginning….revisited

I have been feeling a little nostalgic lately.
A few days ago my mentor called and we had a chance to talk for an hour or two. We reminded each other of anecdotes from past painting trips and laughed about (or at) some of the people we met along the way. I tell him of my recent painting adventures but he always trumps me with his stories of exotic locations throughout Europe. During our conversation my head is swimming with memories.
I thought it would be fun to share some of the paintings from yesteryear. You may notice the RAW wood showing through on most of the paintings. The truth is I was covering so much board at the time (over 10 board’s a day) that I didn’t even bother applying gesso to them. Just coat with linseed oil and paint! These are all completed in a little over an hour except the full figure which is ten minutes. I just covered as much board a humanly possible and would throw out hundreds of these paintings at the end of each month. Fortunately, some were photographed before landing in the trash.
Before you ask if I STILL paint figures or portraits. The answer is yes but I no longer show them. Actually only one person other then me has seen a figure or portrait painting in the past five years.
I promise they will be worth the wait.

Understanding more of the intricacies unveils the passion-the stroke of your vision. The figure is like a quick contour. It reads well as just that. Your style is apparent and how interesting-love the back. As you grow so too does your attention to detail.
When they are ready I will be anticipating the result. Keep painting Elio as with each stroke your magic touches many.

All I can say is Wow! These are just brilliant on so many levels. So…is that a tease? Will you be showing some figures soon? I love the idea of many quick paintings instead of a few labored ones.

Ahhh, figures!! these are truly wonderfully rendered with a few essential brush strokes - you captured the expression and the pose, without letting the details interfere!

BTW, Elio. . . .I didn’t mention that it is great to see these figure pieces and practice. It gives the rest of us a chance to see what we need to be doing in the way of piling up brush miles and practice. Good on Ya!
