| 2007 24×36 Pacifica Beach |
Some students and I set up in a great location near a secluded beach last Saturday in Pacifica, Ca.
The larger painting (24×36) was the first painting of the day and I am a little disappointed because I needed to simplify my subject matter a bit to make the painting work. Originally, the painting had a beautiful Cypress tree leading into the scene but I didn’t leave myself enough foreground to make it work. I think the painting works better now but I will visit the location again soon and give my original concept another try. One of my students (Gregory) stayed with me till sunset as we each endured a chilly evening near the coast painting. The rest of the paintings in this section are the results of that evening.

Wow, 24 x 36 is pretty aggressive for a plein air, isn’t it? My favorites are the 2 middle 12 x 12s. As always I really admire your confident paint handling.

Hey Bill,
Yeah 24×36 is pretty large for plein air but since I don’t paint from photos…ever I developed techniques for making quick decisions and putting down strokes.
I usually tackle a large painting 22×28 to 30×40 early in the day and they get smaller as the day goes on.
For large sunsets…I design a composition I like and then from my deck using natures colors I follow my design ignoring the shapes of things and only paint the colors I see.
Basically, all my work is painted from life or from a small sketch from life.
It was extremely frustrating and even now I only capture fraction of the colors I see. But I keep telling myself if I keep working hard, that one day I will be able to paint all the colors I see.

Way to go, El! The 24 x 36 piece is strong. I love the light behind the wave! I sense changes in your work are afoot. Yup! I can see changes. Good ones!
